They're
between the age of 20-24. They started a band in 2009 through a common
interest in music and released their latest single Abracadabra just last week. Ladies and gentleman let me introduce you to Jenny Broke the Window.
We
had a little chat with the guys and found out who the hell Jenny is,
talked about their new single and found out which band members are
eligible for all the lovely ladies out there. Here's what went down.
So I have to ask…. Who’s Jenny? Or well
where did the band name come from?
Jenny was our neighbor (Matt and Sam) growing up.
Our mother didn’t approve of her because she was a bad influence on one of our
older brothers. So we blamed her for breaking a window one day, when she
clearly didn’t.
How long have you guys been playing
instruments for?
The majority of us have been playing instruments
(or making noise) for the main part of our lives, which is probably why most of
our neighbors never stay long.
What made you want to start a band?
A common interest in the same style of music
amongst friends, plus a lot of free time.
What do you like better, recording or
performing live?
I guess they both have their positives. Recording
is great because it’s more expressive and rewarding in the fact that we see our
ideas grow and become something from nothing. While performing is more
interactive and fun, it gives us the chance to see whether people are enjoying
our music or not.
Best place you’ve played?
Probably either Oxford Arts Factory or The
Standard, both in Sydney.
Whats your weirdest experience with a fan?
I’m not too sure if she was a fan, but a lady
rocked up to a show we did in Adelaide and started performing some crazy yoga
moves side of stage while we played. It was entertaining.
Do you write all your own tunes?
Yeah we write all of our own music.
What are some influences to your music?
I guess the biggest influence on our music is past
experiences, growing up, and the people we have met. Obviously the different
styles of music we like are also major influences.
Sam and Matt L, you guys are brothers… I
know my sister and I always get into sibling battles… do you ever find yourselves
getting into brotherly brawls? And if so do the other guys
ever find themselves stuck in the middle?
Ha, yeah we always have fights/arguments, but I
think it has actually played in our favor because it means we don’t hold back
when we disagree with each other. It can get a bit awkward sometimes, but the
other guys just let us fight it out.
What’s the future of Jenny Broke The Window
look like?
We still have a lot of things we want to do, so as
long as we are having fun I guess our future is looking pretty good.
Trending on your iPods right now is….?
Smith Westerns, White Lies, a whole lot of 80’s
classics, some French pop from the 60s (Francoise Hardy and Serg Gainsbourg)
Can you tell me a little bit about your
latest single Abracadabra…
It’s is a song about endless possibility, and the
bliss of being young and naive - something which I feel a lot of people forget
once they grow older.
To you what are the fundamentals of a good
song?
Something that sticks in your head, with a strong
beat and a solid bassline.
Where can expect to see you guys play next?
We are playing with ‘Private Life’ next week at
Yours and Owls, Wollongong.
For all the other budding young artists out
there what advice would you give them if they were trying to crack the music or
entertainment industry?
I guess be persistent. Don’t write music because
you think it will fit into a certain genre or style. Write music for yourself
because you enjoy it.
