MUSIC REVIEW: BURIAL

Yes, I am aware that Burial isn't a new artists... but sometimes it's nice to review the golden oldies.

The first time I ever heard a track by Burial was 2years ago I think... When I studied Electronic Music Production at SAE in Byron Bay. My teacher told us to bring in our favourite track to play to the class and we'd dissect it. When I heard that it was going to be played through a 40g (give or take a few thousand)  sound system I just had to play some Nero (LOVE ME SOME FAT BASS). Anyway after we got through my track and learnt how recording in Stereo can highly impact a song when you play it it in mono (some frequencies cancel each other out) my teacher chucked on the track Archangel by Burial. I was currently going through a dubstep phase and was immediately EXCITED!

To impress me even more I learnt that virtually all the sounds you hear on this London artist's tracks are all samples of noises (not instruments) but people walking, rain falling, busses, rocks, practically anything you hear is an every day sound manipulated in such away that it sounds like a beautiful instrument. Burial use a fairly basic and simple DAW (digital audio workstation) and his signature sound is the crackly background noise you can hear in his tracks to cover up glitches you get when manipulating noises.

It still astonishes me how a 2-step garage/dubstep producer can turn a cheese, corney RNB song by Ray J (One Wish) into the melencholic Archangel still astonishes me! I love the way he manipulates the voice into a falsetto and bass tone. Giving it that 'archangel' affect of being sung by neither male nor female. Definitely an atherial sounding song and I LOVE IT!

Check out the comparison bellow
Burial: Archangel

Ray J: One Wish

And to make things even more interesting here is a cover by Chet Faker of Archangel... so I guess it's Chet Faker doing a cover of Burial doing a cover of Ray J. Who does it better?

AFTR DARK 11th JULY

Thursday is quickly becoming my favourite day of the week thanks to Aftr Dark. I have to say... the acts last Thursday were probably some of the best I've seen in a while. The guys all had a great energy on stage and there music (originals and covers) were 'amaze-balls'. Here's a taste of some of their stuff.

I Know The Chief
These dudes resemble a younger Foals/Kooks vibe. They're music works really well together and I have a super soft spot for their use of the synth (yes I'm being synth-bias due to my synthy background.. what of it?).

We The People
We The People have a great stage presence... not sure if it was just because lead singer James decided to take his pants off, or purely for the music... either way these guys were sick and I think the burlesque dancers in Melbourne better watch out for this singing 'dancing' quintet. The guys have just released their new clip for their single Leon check it out HERE or have a listen below.

Anyway enough jibber jabber, here are some of the pics from the night.... Don't miss out on next weeks gig next Thursday (more deats to come)

JENNY BROKE THE WINDOW

** To get the full experience listen to this while reading**
<iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F96724833"></iframe>

They're between the age of 20-24.  They started a band in 2009 through a common interest in music and released their latest single Abracadabra just last week. Ladies and gentleman let me introduce you to Jenny Broke the Window.

We had a little chat with the guys and found out who the hell Jenny is, talked about their new single and found out which band members are eligible for all the lovely ladies out there. Here's what went down.

So I have to ask…. Who’s Jenny? Or well where did the band name come from?
Jenny was our neighbor (Matt and Sam) growing up. Our mother didn’t approve of her because she was a bad influence on one of our older brothers. So we blamed her for breaking a window one day, when she clearly didn’t.

How long have you guys been playing instruments for?
The majority of us have been playing instruments (or making noise) for the main part of our lives, which is probably why most of our neighbors never stay long.

What made you want to start a band?
A common interest in the same style of music amongst friends, plus a lot of free time.

What do you like better, recording or performing live?
I guess they both have their positives. Recording is great because it’s more expressive and rewarding in the fact that we see our ideas grow and become something from nothing. While performing is more interactive and fun, it gives us the chance to see whether people are enjoying our music or not.

Best place you’ve played?
Probably either Oxford Arts Factory or The Standard, both in Sydney.

Whats your weirdest experience with a fan?
I’m not too sure if she was a fan, but a lady rocked up to a show we did in Adelaide and started performing some crazy yoga moves side of stage while we played. It was entertaining.

Do you write all your own tunes?
Yeah we write all of our own music.

What are some influences to your music?
I guess the biggest influence on our music is past experiences, growing up, and the people we have met. Obviously the different styles of music we like are also major influences.

Sam and Matt L, you guys are brothers… I know my sister and I always get into sibling battles… do you ever find yourselves getting into brotherly brawls? And if so do the other guys ever find themselves stuck in the middle?
Ha, yeah we always have fights/arguments, but I think it has actually played in our favor because it means we don’t hold back when we disagree with each other. It can get a bit awkward sometimes, but the other guys just let us fight it out.

What’s the future of Jenny Broke The Window look like?
We still have a lot of things we want to do, so as long as we are having fun I guess our future is looking pretty good.

Trending on your iPods right now is….?
Smith Westerns, White Lies, a whole lot of 80’s classics, some French pop from the 60s (Francoise Hardy and Serg Gainsbourg)

Can you tell me a little bit about your latest single Abracadabra
It’s is a song about endless possibility, and the bliss of being young and naive - something which I feel a lot of people forget once they grow older.

To you what are the fundamentals of a good song?
Something that sticks in your head, with a strong beat and a solid bassline.

Where can expect to see you guys play next?
We are playing with ‘Private Life’ next week at Yours and Owls, Wollongong.

For all the other budding young artists out there what advice would you give them if they were trying to crack the music or entertainment industry?
I guess be persistent. Don’t write music because you think it will fit into a certain genre or style. Write music for yourself because you enjoy it.

AFTR DARK - JUNE 6

Last week I was told about a little event called Aftr Dark. Aimed at uni students (which I once was) I was for sure keen to check it out. With my wing-man (girl) by my side we were ready to check out some great live music. The night featured Aussie favourites HartsBuchanan and Clubfeet DJs as well as some burlesque performances by Miss Frankie Valentine.

It was a sick night which luckily happens every Thursday at the John Curtin Hotel. Here are some pics of what went down.

NAYSAYER & GILSUN

**To get the full experience make sure you listen to this while reading** <iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F65799652"></iframe>

So who is Naysayer and Gilsun? They're a Melbourne based electro duo that met in high-school and since have created a music and visual experience that will blow listeners minds. I had a chance to catch up with Sam and Nick and talk all things music, food and their inspiration. Here's what went down.

You guys were mates in high school. Many people lose contact soon after graduating. Do you think it’s just the music that has kept you guys friends?

High school brought us together but there are a million things that keep us friends, co-workers, housemates and production partners. Or maybe it’s our business interests and contracts. We’ll leave that for the lawyers.

Your music is very dreamy and spacious. Has this always been the concept of Naysayer and Gilsun?

Well, a lot of the sample-based, collage stuff we originally obsessed over as a duo was very in-your-face and literal in the way it referenced culture and drew upon the audience’s connection with the work. With our original productions and audiovisual show, NGTV, we aim to keep things a little more cerebral and Lynchian... Not too obtuse to be inaccessible, but just confused and weird enough that they properly echo the thoughts that sparked the initial idea, I guess.

What are some of influences your music?

We both listen to a pretty broad range of styles, but are particularly obsessed with electronic artists like John Roberts, Blondes, John Talabot, Daphni, Villalobos and Four Tet at the moment. People who seem to jump from sound to sound effortlessly and push their work further with every release.

Your popular song In Mind is very dreamy and beautiful and we just can’t get enough. When can we expect some more beats dropping?

Thanks! That’s very kind. We have a couple of releases in the can for release later this year.

What’s the future of Naysayer and Gilsun look like?

Well, we’re about to cook a Mexican tomato soup for dinner, so: very bright.

Now trending on your iPods right is….?

The last couple of singles from Jagwar Ma, Peak Twins, Chance The Rapper, Ka, the new Jon Hopkins LP, the upcoming I’lls EP, Lindsay Tuc’s Glassware EP and that Four Tet mix for Beats in Space. Also - too many podcasts.

How did you guys get to where you are?

With help from our friends and everyone who’s been good enough to support us. Also, our mums for letting us DJ on school nights when we were 17.

Short clips mixed with different songs seems to be one of your specialties. Where does the love of clips come from and how do you find time to produce beautiful songs and sexy clips?

Between a couple of other projects, this is basically what we do full time now. We try to research new material constantly and follow through on concepts to avoid wasting time on huge video projects that go nowhere.

We try to write a new tune (or something close to it) every few days. Even if it’s bollocks, it’s just good exercise.

Will videos always play a large part with Naysayer and Gilsun?

Absolutely.

Which comes first.. The video or the music?

It changes from idea to idea, really. Whatever sets off the spark becomes the starting point.

For all the other budding young artists out there what advice would you give them if they were trying to crack the music or entertainment industry?

Stay decent, support your friends and learn to be patient with your work and ambitions. Basically: don’t be a dickhead but learn how to spot one.

Is there any shout-outs or anything you would like to say to your fans/public?

The two most important things are: Bossman Records and Joe’s Pizza in Coburg.
Thank you!

Be sure to check-out the guys stuff and suport Aussie music - www.naysayerandgilsun.com
